History
Monterey Murray Grey Stud was founded with the purchase of a line
of females from the Arumvale Stud dispersal in 1976. The quality
of these foundation breeders gave us a solid base on which to build
the herd. Further select females were added, mainly of The Glen
breeding, from the Margaret River, Staple Farm, Illawong and Rockliffe
Studs.

We have strived to develop a broad genetic base and in
doing so have absorbed the nucleus of two of Western Australias
foremost Murray Grey herds in Wandena and Koojan Hill. We have
also purchased an excellent line of mature cows from the Bundaleer
Herd. The quality cows from these three herds give us lineage
to some of the breeds elite foundation females. |
There have been many sires used over the past 25 years,
but those whose influence stand out most include Wandena Beau,
Wandena On Time, Cadella Park Anson, (sold to NZ for $15,000
and was later Breed Supreme at NZ Royal), Cadella Park Longfella
(Senior and Grand Champion Perth Royal and sire of many Wandena
cows), Orcadia Park Syndicate and Lochaber-Braes Diplomat. More
recently, our home-bred sires, Marshall, Star Chief, Majestic
Lad, Tremendous and Starlight are producing quality stock within
the herd and throughout Australia and with semen to NZ, UK,
USA and South Africa. |

Artificial
breeding has been used extensively for more than 17 years, backed
up by the best walking bulls available. Group Breedplan has been
used for many years as a tool to compliment and enhance our visual
selection and breeding criteria. More recently, embryo transfer
programmes have been conducted on some of our elite breeders with
encouraging results.
Monterey has a record "second to none" in performance
trials (Kojonup grass fed bull trial, Expo feed efficiency steer
trial, and more recently the Vasse feed efficiency bull trial).

The cornerstones of our breeding program have
always been structure, fertility, performance
and temperament. Rigorous culling over many years has
refined the herd to where today, our herd average is in
the top 5-10% across the traits for all animals in the breed
on International Group Breedplan. |
Our
cattle are bred with our clients needs to the forefront-
that is, cattle that pay the bills! They must perform and produce
sound returns for our clients for us to stay in business. Over
the years, our cattle have shown the ability to adapt and thrive
in many varied environments- from high rainfall country in Tasmania
to tropical Queensland, to dryland areas of WA and SA to the Upper
Murray and many varied places between.

With
200 stud females currently joined in 2001, and an ongoing ET programme,
we are continuing to further improve the growth and efficiency
in our herd to meet the demands of future markets.
